Congratulations to #Jane Cure who completed the ‘Walk for a Cure ‘ Challenge

Walk for A.Cure along the Grand Union Canal
27 August 2011
——————————————————————————–
Ade Cure, shown right with his wife Jane, was guest speaker at our last President’s Dinner at the House of Lords. He was a proud, strong, determined man and raised over £30,000 for kidney cancer, most of which was donated to the James Whale Fund before he died of kidney cancer in March 2011 after a four year fight.

He had such a positive attitude to life that his brother-in-law Andy Coleman and Jane plan to take on this challenge in Ade’s memory, and are determined to smash the £10,000 target set for fund raising.

The walk will begin on Saturday 27 August, from Gas Street Basin in Birmingham (shown above), and will involve walking 144.5 miles along the Grand Union Canal to finish on Saturday 3 September in Little Venice, London. The route is as follows:

Sat 27 Aug Gas Street Basin to Rowington (bridge 62)
Sun 28 Aug Rowington (bridge 62) to Napton (bridge 108)
Mon 29 Aug Napton (bridge 108) to Bugbrooke (bridge 35)
Tues 30 Aug Bugbrooke (bridge 35) to Wolverton (bridge 76a)
Wed 31 Aug Wolverton (bridge 76a) to Linslade (bridge 115a)
Thur 1 Sept Linslade (bridge 115a) to Hemel (bridge 150)
Fri 2 Sept Hemel (bridge 150) to Cowley (bridge 190)
Sat 3 Sept Cowley (bridge 190) to Little Venice

You can help us to achieve our target in at least three different ways:

Walk for A Cure Urgent plea for motor home

A WELLESBOURNE woman who lost her husband to kidney cancer is in urgent need of a motorhome to help with a fundraising challenge.

Jane Cure and her brother Andy Coleman are preparing to walk 144 miles from Birmingham to London to raise funds for the James Whales Fund for Kidney Cancer in memory of her late husband Adrian, who died in March this year.

He and his wife had raised £35,000 for the cause since his diagnosis four years ago and Mrs Cure is determined to carry on supporting the charity.

But she and Mr Coleman have not yet managed to secure the loan of a motorhome or similar vehicle, which they will need to transport their luggage, food and refreshments along the way and provide them with a place to stay each night.

They begin their walk, which they are calling Walk for A Cure, on Wednesday August 31 and aiming to reach London on Saturday September 3 and to raise £10,000. People are welcome to join them along the way at any point on the route.

Anyone who is able to loan Mrs Cure and Mr Coleman a motorhome should immediately email waney@talk21.com

To sponsor the pair or find out more about their challenge, visit acureonline.com/walk-for-a-cure

FREE Kidney Cancer Patient Days

Kidney Cancer Patient Days

Following the success of the Fund’s Kidney Cancer Patient Days in 2009 and 2010, the programme has been extended to several patient days in 2011.

Earlier this year, the Fund organised 3 very successful kidney cancer patient days in Cardiff, Swansea and Manchester. The next kidney cancer patient days are scheduled for the autumn, so please keep the following dates free in your diary;
• Wednesday 5 October in Scotland (venue to be announced)
• Wednesday 16 November in South East England (venue to be announced)

You migh like to attend one of the Fund’s kidney cancer patient days if;

  • Have you recently been diagnosed with kidney cancer?

  • Would you like to learn more about kidney cancer and treatments for kidney cancer direct from the experts?

  • You interested in meeting other kidney cancer patients with or those who have received treatment and recovered?

  • You like more information about the support available to kidney cancer patients and their families

Kidney Cancer Patient Day, Manchester 15 June 2011

Post event comments:-

Professor Robert Hawkins, Cancer Research UK Professor and Director of Medical Oncology at the University of Manchester and the Christie Hospital NHS Trust, chaired the day attended by over 70 patients

A warm thank you to all who attended the Kidney Cancer Patient Day in Manchester last Wednesday, 15th June.

The day was a tremendous success with a fantastic attendance and the feedback from patients and carers was very positive. It was lovely to meet so many patients and their families or carers.

It was wonderful to receive the comments about how informative the presentations were, how nice it was to speak to other patients and carers, and how comforting it is to know that you are not alone – to quote just a few!

A big thank you to all the speakers, especially Professor Robert Hawkins and his team, for the very helpful and interesting talks they gave. Feedback from patients and carers was that they found the talks very useful and they gained a lot from attending the meeting.

These patient days are so important to patients and without the support of the team at the James Whale Fund this day would not have been possible.

The James Whale Fund will be organising their next patient day on Wednesday 5th October in Scotland (venue to be announced), so please keep this date in your diary!

If you have any questions left over from patient day or would like to find out more about the work that we do, then please do not hesitate to contact the patient support team on: contact@kidneycancersupportnetwork.co.uk

Or you can call us via the Kidney Cancer CareLine on: 0330 111 2 333

A collection of photos taken at the Manchester Patient Day can be found here.

Other Patient Days

If you have been unable to attend Patient Days held already this year we are holding two further events this year:

Wednesday 5 October in Scotland (venue to be announced).

Wednesday 16 November in the South East (venue to be announced).

The format and content of each Patient Day will be similar, but with different speakers.

We look forward to welcoming you to one of our Patient Days this year!

Manchester Kidney Cancer Patient Day 15th of June

Manchester Patient Day – Feedback
by Julia » Thu Jun 16, 2011 9:21 am

A warm thank you to all who attended the Kidney Cancer Patient Day in Manchester yesterday

It was lovely to meet so many patients – some whom we have emailed and spoken to on the phone many many times but who we have never met, and those new patients who we met for the first time.

The day was a tremendous success with a fantastic attendance, and the feedback from patients and carers was very very positive.
It was wonderful to receive the comments about how informative the presentations were, how nice it was to speak to other patients and carers, and how comforting it is to know that you are not alone – to quote just a few!!!

I must say a big thank you to all the speakers, for the very helpful and interesting talks they all gave. I know from the patients and carers I did manage to speak to how useful these talks were and how much they gained just from attending.

A thank you must also go to the James Whale Fund and especially to Sharon for organising the whole day that we know is so important to patients. It is no easy task putting the day together, bringing speakers on board to give up their time for the day, organising the venue and of course ensuring patients and carers know about it. Without the support of the James Whale Fund this day would not be possible, so a huge thank you to all.

I mustn’t forget a very heartfelt thank you to Professor Hawkins and all his team for their huge support and backing for running this day for kidney cancer patients.
If you are reading this forum for the first time following the patient day a very warm welcome to you.
Have a look through, see the topics discussed, join up, don’t be afraid to start a new discussion if you have questions to ask. You will see we have a very helpful community of Kidney Cancer patients and carers who are all more than willing to share their experiences for the benefit of others.

We really hope you enjoyed the day and find our forum helpful.
If you have any questions at all about the forum or any questions left over from the patient day itself then please do not hesitate to contact either Rose or myself on:
contact@kidneycancersupportnetwork.co.uk

Or you can call us via the CareLine on: 0330 111 2 333
