Join Leela and shape up to help us take steps to beat kidney cancer!
Our first ever “Jog On” event will take place over a 12.6 mile route through wonderful Suffolk countryside surrounding the villages of Withersfield, Great Thurlow and Carlton.

A 9:00 start on Saturday 1st October will see you already wearing your James Whale T-shirt, and ready to jog or walk the route that starts and finishes at the White Horse pub, Hollow Hill, Withersfield, CB9 7SH. Marshalls will be stragetically placed along the route to ensure your safety, and once at the finish you can relax with some tasty and very well earned refreshments.

Sponsorship forms, route, registration form and the all important T&Cs are available to download. Training plans are also included for you and these can be found at the end of the route document. Cheques for the £15 registration fee should be made payable to James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer.

A poster is available to download and print, so please feel free to publicise both the event and your involvement. Why not take one into your work or any other convienent place and help encourage friends and family to join in!

An event such as this can only be organised with the help of local supporters, and a great deal of thanks goes to the White Horse for agreeing to host the Jog On. A big thank you also goes out to Dilip Visana at the nearby Kedington Stores for supplying the bottled water.

.Walk for A. Cure
As you may be aware, my wonderful husband lost his courageous battle with cancer on the 7th March 2011. He was first diagnosed with Kidney Cancer in March 2007, and without medication, he wasn’t expected to live longer than 12 months. There followed fights with PCT’s for drugs that could pro-long his life & participating in clinical drugs trials and thankfully, we were blessed with another four years together.

During those 4 years, Ade was totally committed to raising as much money as we could for the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer, and as you will have seen from this website, we have raised lots of money and had loads of fun doing it! New Wellesbourne Blooms Trailer

Our big challenge for 2011 was the ‘Walk for A. Cure’. The idea was initiated by my brother, Andy, and wholeheartedly supported by Ade, who was planning to join Andy & I on as much of the walk as his health would permit him. Unfortunately, this was not to be.

Ade was a proud, strong, determined man with such a positive attitude to life and who was a major inspiration to everyone he met, including myself. This is why Andy & I still plan to take on this challenge in Ade’s memory, and are determined to smash the £10,000 target set for fund raising.

The walk will commence on Saturday the 27th August, from Gas Street Basin in Birmingham, and will involve walking 144.5 miles along the Grand Union Canal to finish on Saturday 3rd September in Little Venice, London. The route is as follows:

27th August Gas Street Basin to Rowington (19 miles)
28th August Rowington to Napton (20 miles)
29th August Napton to Weedon (18 miles)
30th August Weedon to Stoke Bruene (18.5 miles)
31st August Stoke Bruene to Fenny Stratford (15 miles)
1st Sept Fenny Stratford to Rickmansworth (18 miles)
2nd Sept Rickmansworth to Hayes (19 miles)
3rd Sept Hayes to Little Venice (17 miles)
You can help us to achieve our target in two different ways:

◦Ask friends and family to sponsor you and walk some or all of the route with us Walk for A. Cure Sponsor Form
◦Make your donation on our JustGiving page
Please let us know if you are intending to take part, and which part of the route you will be walking.

We would love as many of you to join us as possible to walk in Ade’s memory. Lets make him proud of us, and keep his legacy going by not only achieving but exceeding this target. He was such a big part of so many people’s lives, so with all your help, this can, and will be done!

Thank you

And so it begins… Small Charity Week 2011

Small Charity Week kicks off this morning as we take to the street with an audacious campaign to get everyone behind the small charity sector. The I Love Small Charities Pledge is an opportunity for anyone, wherever they are, to sign up to find out more about small charities and how they can help our sector to thrive.

We want people everywhere to pledge to do something to help out a small charity between now and Small Charity Week 2012 (yes, we’re planning it already!). Some people may donate their time or talents, others may donate funds. Some people may want to help out on an ongoing basis, others as a one-off. Some people want to support a specific cause, others a charity near where they live. Whatever the motivation, the I Love Small Charities Pledge is all about getting the information that will make it easy to support a small charity.

Once someone signs up to the pledge they will receive regular emails showcasing small charities and offering advice on how a volunteer or donor can make a meaningful impact on an organisation.
In London the pledge will be taking to the streets to sign up the public and garner some attention for Small Charity Week. In the evening some of our VIP friends will be signing the pledge – keep an eye on the website www.smallcharityweek.com for the latest updates.

Sign the Pledge

Anyone can sign the pledge by visiting www.smallcharityweek.com/pledge . This is a chance for us to promote the whole sector, so please add it to your Facebook page, tweet about it or tell whoever you can.

Be Part of It

As well as the events taking place throughout the week, you can get involved in Small Charity Week online. You can tweet about Small Charity Week using the hashtag #scweek11. Send pictures of your work or Small Charity Week activities to photos@smallcharityweek.com.

Small Charity Week is your week so make the most of it!

A Massive Thanks!

Small Charity Week wouldn’t be possible without the support of our amazing partners at the Charity Technology Trust (CTT). CTT connects the third sector with technology. Since 2001, they have been bridging the gap between the third sector and technology partners to help organisations improve their effectiveness. The CTXchange programme has enabled thousands of charities to work far more effectively using donated technology – speeding up communications, ensuring compatibility between equipment, and protecting systems. They also enable third sector organisations to share a range of finance, communications and campaigning services.

What fantastic weather we’ve been having over the past few weeks, plenty of opportunities for training before the event!

This is a very quick update newsletter to let you all know that we’ve had to change the route slightly. We are now travelling to Calais rather than Boulogne, this is because the ferry companies are no longer sailing to Boulogne for financial reasons.

This will mean that we’ll forgo the stay in Dover on the first night and sail straight across to Calais which will give us a nice fresh start on the next day. We’ll publish the day 2 change in route on the web-site in due course so that those of you with GPS devices can upload them if you wish.

In terms of any extra distance it’s marginal so dont worry about that!

By now you should all have heard from Crispin with regards to the arrangements, rooms, shirt sizes, trains, bikes etc etc. If you haven’t heard from us then please let us know as soon as possible so we can make sure we have everything organised.

As ever if you have any questions then please feel free to call us or e-mail us by clicking on this link

Keep up the training and we’ll be in touch again soon!

First of all thank you once again to all of you who have signed up the Arch To Arc. With over 30 riders for this year’s event entries are now closed. So we have the team and we’re all raring to go!

Your Training

We hope you’re fully stuck into your training schedule. If not – don’t worry, you still have a good amount of time to feel fully prepared for the event by following the 14 week plan on our web site. For more information click on this link. The weather’s been great recently so let’s hope it keeps up so we all have no excuses!

Your Fundraising

Most of you will be well on your way to your personal £1000 target and money is now starting to come into the charity, so thank you for your efforts so far, lets keep it going!

What you need to know

We’ll be setting off from London at 8am on the 23rd June so you need to make sure you’ve made arrangements to be at Speaker’s Corner (next to Marble Arch) by 7:30am at the latest.

We’ll take care of the rest! Ferries, Hotels and rail tickets will be taken care of and food will be provided along the way, breakfast, snacks, drinks, lunch and evening meals. The only meal we ask you to pay for is your breakfast on the ferry over to Boulogne because we have a very early start on the Friday morning and there wont be time to get breakfast at the hotel before hand (The ferry does a great cooked breakfast!!).

We’ll give you the exact times for the rail trip back to London in the coming weeks once we have the confirmations from everyone (see below), however to help you we anticipate arriving in Paris around 2pm.

What we need from you

Here’s a list of things you need to let us know NOW so we can deal with the final fine details:

How do you want to get your bike back? Click on this link to see the 3 options we have on offer.

If you are cycling with a partner or friend then please let us know who you want to share a room with for our overnight stays along the way. If you are cycling on your own, dont worry we’ll sort it for you.

What is your shirt size (s, m, l, xl)? We want to provide everyone with a James Whale Fund cycling shirt as a momento of your efforts and for photo opportunities to promote the fund.

Any special dietary requirements you may have?

If you want to stay in Paris overnight then please let us know so we can book a rail ticket for you next day rather than on the day we arrive. You’ll be expected to make your own Hotel arrangements for that night if you’re staying in Paris. For those staying we intend to arrange an informal post ride diner at somewhere reasonably priced where we can all share the costs.

Confirmation back to us of your full name as it appears on your passport.

That’s it for now, as ever if you have any questions then please feel free to call us or e-mail us by clicking on this link

Keep up the training and we’ll be in touch again soon!

It’s been ages and ages since I last write a blog but I’ve been so busy just settling down into my new job, riding bikes, buying dogs, roller-skiing and trying to sleep that there hasn’t been time.

However I thought it would be worth publishing the Arch to Arc video so you can all see what it was like, and hey it might even encourage some of you to sign up for it next year ………. Here it is!

Arch 2 Arch London/Paris Cycle from Laurence Cameron on Vimeo.

I think Laurie has done a great job, just about the right length.

The roller-skiing has started again in ernest, which is a good thing since I’ve put on so much weight since the bike ride… Crazy given all the cycling, running and skiing I’ve done, but at least you now know why there’s a pie shortage in Southern England.

Lots of exciting things have been going on at the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer over the past couple of months. I’ll try and make an effort to write about them shortly, things like the nurses on-line training course and the Patient Day that’s coming up on the 17th November. Check out the web-site if you want to learn more.

Oh yeah, and here’s a pici of the new hound ….

Hands up who didn’t go Awwww Cute!!! ….. (we’ll see just how cute it remains once she’s destroyed our carpets and furniture).

So this is what I’ve just published on my site.

Trevor Coultart, Arc to Arc rider 2010.

Well, we did it. Eleven cyclists. 266 miles. Four days. And only one puncture.

Marble Arch, Thursday 8am.
Eleven riders raring to go.

What an amazing experience it was. Apart from a few hills that were damned hard work, I loved every minute. Heck, even the hills weren’t that bad, as a long climb was almost always rewarded by a fantastic sweep back down the other side.

In f act, I was amazed at how I got on. The first day alone was the longest I’d ever ridden, so I thought that the next day would be hard work right from the start, but I was delighted to discover that I felt just the same on day two as I had on day one. And so it continued. My thighs are aching, and I’m a bit saddle sore, but apart from that I feel absolutely fantastic.

I’m quite sure that there’s no way I could have undertaken such a ride alone. The random bunch of cyclists who came together to do this ride turned out to be a lovely group, and it was a pleasure to ride with them. And an ideal number, too: enough to group and ride as a bunch, to help one another along, to encourage, support, cajole, and mock one another. And few enough that over four days we could actually get to know one another and it soon felt like riding with friends. I suspect that would be less likely to happen riding with a much bigger group. It was great to have the benefit of a couple of experienced club riders who could advise us on all sorts of technical, physiological, psychological and practical issues, and also others who, like me, had never done anything remotely like this before. At least a couple had hardly ridden since childhood until signing up for this ride. But we stuck together, and all made it in one piece. We’ve all swapped contact details; I hope some of us manage to stay in touch.

And we also couldn’t have done it without the support of an amazing crew. At every stop – or whenever we needed – we had an endless supply of water, energy bars, snacks, sweets available. And picnic lunches of fresh french bread, cheeses and meats, cakes, crisps – as much as we needed. All served up from the back of a big white van.

Arc de Triomphe, Sunday 2pm.
A well-earned glass of champagne or three.

Overall, I’m so utterly glad I’ve done it. People have asked if I’ll do it again next year. Initially, I said not. But it occurs to me that if I could persuade a few friends to do it with me, I might consider it. Anyone fancy a challenge?

This is just a short report until I can get myself sorted to write up each day in detail. I’m back at work today (!) so not sure when I’ll get started on it.

We’re so close now to the event, just a few days and we’re all off to Paris and if the weather holds like it is today it’ll be fantastic !

The team have raise over £22,000 so far and the contributions still seem to be coming in…. what an effort!

It sounds like the team have been training hard and every-one’s physically ready, but don’t forget to give yourself a few days off before we go, time to taper off as they say. My final ride will be on Sunday (the London to Brighton) and I’m just going to take it nice and easy and enjoy the day. I can’t do anymore than I’ve done and my experience from doing it back in March tells me that it’s worth being well rested up before we start.

Also If you can get to your local bike shop before we go then it’s worth getting them to give it a quick check over, however a certain amount of spares will be taken and we have a spare bike in the support van if all else fails. There are cycle shops along the route (at least in Boulogne and Aberville so we can get parts if needed, they all seemed to be very helpful)

As before, if you’ve got any questions about logistics or anything then let me know, I’m taking the whole of next week off so I have plenty of time to run around for people if needed. We have a final pre-event meeting over at the James Whale Fund on Monday where we’ll do our final checks.

Everyone should have received their Arch to Arc tops by now, and here’s a picture of one of the riders modelling it for us …nice hip work Trevor!! Makes it all seem much more real, the excitement for me is palpable.

The Official Arch to Arc Shirt

I’ve been forced into riding my push-bike into work this week due to a flat tyre on my motorbike I was only intending to ride in one day this week, but never mind at least the sun’s out. My BMW dealership love to delay things, I almost feel guilty asking them for anything, it’s like they’re doing me some big favour allowing me to buy one. Anyway, enough of that I could rant for hours on how badly I’ve been treated as a customer.

As for next year’s ride, I’ve been plodding around the streets of London during my Lunch-hours going into as many cycle shops as possible asking them to put up a poster and leaving them with a batch of leaflets, they’ve all been pretty nice about it so far and CycleSurgery and Evans Cycles have both given me contacts in their head office marketing departments.

We’re looking to learn from this year’s ride and extend it to 50 people next year so it’s going to mean a lot of leg work to get the riders. Jane and the kids have agreed to hand out leaflets at the London to Brighton event this weekend to see if tapping into a targeted audience has any impact. I’m of the belief that doing as many of the Cycling Sportif’s as possible this year and handing out leaflets and talking to people may be the best way forward. Anyway, nothing to lose by trying that approach.

If you’re reading this and still want to donate then please click on one of the links at the bottom of this blog, if we could get to £25,000 this year … well, wow!!
